- Re-engineering and reverse engineering are two distinct functions, even though systems development professionals sometimes confuse the terms. Re-engineering changes the underlying technology of a system without affecting the overall function, while reverse engineering is the backward engineering of a system to the specification stage. A system which has been reverse engineered can be regenerated more economically and productively. Re-engineering reduces the skill set required to modify the system, reduces the likelihood of errors introduced during maintenance, and is the first step toward reverse engineering.
